The Future of Debt Buying
David G. Rosenberg
Unifund Chairman, CEO, Founder
In his presentation, “The Future of Debt Buying,” renowned debt buying pioneer David G. Rosenberg discusses the growth over the past four decades of the traditional collections business, the current role of the debt buyer/collector in both society and in the financial community, and the expectations of how the debt buying industry will perform and progress in the coming years.
Mr. Rosenberg elaborates on the intertwined evolution of the creditor, debtor and agency, and explains how the industry is thereby changing the way it approaches the debtor and its own collection models.
Through his visionary and enthusiastic presentation style, Mr. Rosenberg addresses many of the leading concerns facing the debt buying industry today, some of which include:
- How smaller debt buyers can survive & thrive in the industry;
- Pricing & depreciation trends of debt portfolios;
- How increased capital in the marketplace has affected debt collections; and
- How computerization and technology are continuing to enhance the ability to measure recovery performance.
He also discusses several innovative and thought-provoking subjects, such as:
- Why debt sales will become more specialized in the future;
- Transforming non-payers into income generators by introducing appealing financial goods & services;
- Lack of expectation on the part of the consumer to be pursued;
- Changing social & moral implications of borrowing money; and
- Institutionalization & mass marketing of credit vs. an expected return to localization of debtor/collector relationships.
Mr. Rosenberg also discusses the regenerative aspect of debt, recognizing the cyclicality of peoples’ lives and how that knowledge can extend the realistic collection period for a portfolio.
